Systema

Systema, also known as "Poznai Sebya" (Know Yourself), is a Russian martial art that was developed by the Cossack warriors in the 10th century. Battles occurred during harsh winters or dreadful summers, and Russian warriors were often outnumbered by their opponents. As a result, they created a system that combined a strong spirit and masterful fighting tactics that could be performed under any conditions. When the Communists came to power, Systema, like most traditional practices, became illegal and was only reserved for the Spetsnaz. The purpose of Systema was not only to have healthy and mentally strong warriors but also to ensure that they would return home able to function and maintain that strength.

It's the synergy of these three components that creates a true Systema fighter: combat skill, strong spirit, and a healthy body. For the sake of this newsletter, the focus will be on the mental and physical components of this martial art.

Cold Exposure and Systema

Mental stillness and physical enhancement during battle and outside of battle are achieved through many practices in Systema, one of which is cold water dousing.

To perform this properly according to Systema, fill two buckets with freezing water and take them outside. Make sure your bare feet are in contact with the earth. Relax by regulating your breathing, and only then pour the first bucket of water from the head down; don't rush the process. Repeat the process immediately after. Once you're drenched, make sure to maintain controlled breathing and not give in to shivering. You want to remain outside in this meditative state for a few minutes. Make sure not to take hot showers afterward; taking one would offset all of the benefits. This should be practiced twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Systema fighters like to combine cold water dousing with fasting.
